Many people think you need secret magic sauce to grow plants and flowers. City dwellers with small apartments and postage-stamp yards think the joy of gardening is out of reach from lack of space. The truth is, anyone can garden anywhere. I took on gardening when I had my first apartment. I used pots and window boxes to turn my back porch into a beautiful urban oasis. All you need is dirt, something to hold it, and water. Really. Gardening is so easy. It is a past-time that is so rewarding, that everyone should be able to turn their home into something green and verdant. In fact, I believe that each of us has a responsibility to the planet to reserve a little space in our home to bring habitat back to where we live. If each of us took responsibility for our own space, and made it a green, living, biodiverse oasis, the environmental problems we are facing would dissipate. One of my passions is to teach and inspire everyone everywhere to grow a little something, and make their space beautiful. But beyond that, invite nature into it-like birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators. When our plants can support the local food web, while beautifying our space, we become true stewards of the planet. And it really is easy. Just a few small moves can make a big impact. I have written a few books to help teach and guide aspiring gardeners how to use native plants to support pollinators; BEE NATIVE! FLOWER POWER, and BEE NATIVE! FLOWER POT POWER. I also have many how-to videos on my YouTube channel, including my series, “Flora and the bees”, with tips and tours for biodiverse gardens. I was asked to speak at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show and have taught many classes around native plants for pollinators with City Grange Garden Center in Chicago.
